London is a loose adaptation of London Labour and the London Poor written by Henry Mayhew.
The original journals formed a landmark study of poverty in 1840’s London and started a conversation which ultimately led to establishing the welfare state.
The play is about the pervasiveness of poverty in society. And the inability of those with power to change conditions for those without.
The adaptation was commissioned by Sarah Franckom for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and will be performed there in December 2022 in a production directed by Abigail Graham. Sarah Dickenson has also offered invaluable dramaturgical support.
